Dolores' Book of Lucky Homes

The twelve signs, the rooms of the house, and Mama's old rules — with the sense in every one.

“The letters people sent me were hardly ever about next Tuesday. They were about home. Most of my answers were too long for twelve paragraphs, so they went into a shoebox. This is the shoebox.”— Dolores

The Twelve Signs

Fifteen pages for every sign: the character in the old astrologers' own words, the home, the bedroom and the kitchen that suit it — with a real recipe — the front door, who it gets along with, Mama's rules and its lucky days.

A Lucky House, Room by Room

The threshold, the kitchen, the table, the bedroom, the laundry, the porch and the garden — about two hundred customs, each with where it comes from and why it made sense.

Find your sign — and everybody else's

Every sign gets the same fifteen-page chapter, so you can look up your husband, your daughter-in-law and the neighbor who never returns the casserole dish. Born on the edge of two signs? Each chapter has a table of the exact change-over dates for every year from 1940 to 2030, worked out from NASA's own planet tables.

What you'll find each time

✦
Dolores at her kitchen table in Youngstown, next to the typewriter

At the kitchen table, next to the typewriter that wrote the column.

Why it got written down

Dear friend, pour yourself a cup of coffee first

For twenty-six years I wrote the horoscope column in our little newspaper in Youngstown, Ohio — twelve short paragraphs a week, squeezed between the bridge column and the crossword.

I learned the stars at a kitchen table on the north side of town. Mama was born in a village near Palermo and ran our house by rules. A dropped dish towel meant company was coming, so you swept the porch. Nobody put new shoes on the table, ever. Every one of us knew our sign by the time we could spell it.

Frank, my husband — a Taurus who likes his chair right where it is — finally said, Dolores, either write the book or buy a bigger closet. So here it is: everything that wouldn't fit in twelve paragraphs.

— Dolores

Honest about it

Who it's for

✦

It's for you if…

  • you read your horoscope with your morning coffee and smile
  • you grew up with a grandmother's “never do that in the house” and want to know where it came from
  • you'd like a gift for a daughter, a sister or a friend who loves the stars
  • you like a recipe, a garden calendar and a good story in the same book

It's not for you if…

  • you want a personal chart reading — this book teaches you to read your own, it doesn't do it for you
  • you want predictions about money, health or love — there are none, on purpose
  • you want a printed hardcover — this is a PDF (you can print it at home)
  • you want serious astronomy — this is tradition and fun
